Journey of Transformation: My Aslead Servant Leadership Experience
By Kagendo Kituto, Aslead Alumni & Tutor at Nairobi Campus

Introduction
When I joined the ASLEAD Servant Leadership class in May 2023, my goal was simple: to become a better leader for my church position. Little did I know that this decision would mark the beginning of a lifelong journey.

A Transformative Journey
The Servant Leadership class is a transformative journey that works from the inside out across ten modules. My journey has evolved from student to class president, conference speaker, and now tutor—profoundly changing my life along the way. I am dedicated to training and nurturing more servant leaders who lead like Jesus.

A Global Impact
In September, I joined a team that traveled to Uganda to conduct a Servant Leadership workshop for the corporate sector. This experience demonstrated ASLEAD Institute’s immense potential to create meaningful change.

Building Meaningful Relationships
Through this journey, I’ve formed meaningful friendships with people outside my usual circles. These relationships have created a strong support network as we pursue our shared goal of leading like Jesus. My classmates have become dear to my heart, and together we’ve accomplished remarkable things that have transformed not only our own lives but also the lives of those around us.

Key Lessons: The H.O.U.S.E.S. Framework
Among the most impactful lessons I’ve learned are the qualities of a Jesus-like leader, captured in the acronym H.O.U.S.E.S. I regularly use this framework to evaluate my own leadership:

  • H – Humility
  • O – Obedience
  • U – Unselfishness
  • S – Service
  • E – Ethics
  • S – Surrender

“Leaders don’t merely light the way—they walk it with integrity, leading by example.”
John C. Maxwell

Continuing the Journey

Inspired by Dr. Mulinge’s mentorship and the profound impact of the certificate program on my understanding of leadership, I have enrolled in a Master’s program in leadership. Through this journey, I’ve come to realize that the world needs servant leaders who embody Jesus’s example—those who listen attentively, show genuine empathy, facilitate healing, maintain self-awareness, communicate effectively, and simultaneously serve and strengthen their communities.

Servant Leadership: A Marathon, Not a Sprint
Servant Leadership is not a 100-meter sprint but a marathon—our true legacy becomes apparent only after we’ve stepped away.

“Just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life as a ransom for many.”
Matthew 20:28

Our call is to serve, not to be served.

“The best way to find yourself is to lose yourself in the service of others.”
Mahatma Gandhi

Conclusion
My journey at ASLEAD has been nothing short of life-changing. Through servant leadership, I’ve discovered a new purpose, formed deep connections, and learned how to lead with integrity and humility. As I continue to grow, I am more committed than ever to embodying the servant leader model in every aspect of my life.
